A Room of One’s Own

“…It is necessary to have five hundred Pounds a year and a room with a lock on the door if you are  to write fiction or poetry.”

– Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own

In  1987 my short story The Silver Frame was published in Room of One’s Own, a journal dedicated to promote the works of emerging writers.

“In 2007, the collective relaunched the magazine as Room, reflecting a more outward-facing, conversational editorial mandate.

Currently,Room publishes short fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, art, feature interviews, and regular features that promote dialogue between readers, writers and the collective, including “Roommate” (a profile of a Room reader), “Room Recommends” (short recommendations of books, films and music), and “The Back Room” (back page opinion pieces on feminist topics of interest).”

  1. Thanks for letting me know about this publication, Carol. I will check it out. I think, for sure, every woman needs a space of her own to create-whether a room or a desk or a corner that is just hers.

  2. I hope I have the time to create something new. I will be leaving my daughter’s in a couple of days. She is feeling better now. When I get home it looks like my younger daughter needs me to babysit. But that’s Ok. I still should have a few hours to myself.

  3. Thanks for sharing Carol. I’ve recently started thinking about submitting work in competitions and magazines, but it’s a scary world. As you say, stepping out of your comfort zone. I have my eye on a UK one for this month, and as I’m also doing the novel, I think that’s enough, but good luck to those thinking of room!

    • Courage and discipline, I think. 🙂
I recently was worried that I wasn’t spending enough time on my novels. Maybe it was because I was bored or things were going to slow or it was hard work.
Then, in my own personal way I asked for courage and discipline to spend more time on my novels.
And here I am working on my novels 3 to 4 times more than I did just a week ago and the bonus is that I’m enjoying it.
I really don’t know how this works. But it does. 🙂

      • Puts life into the words “ask and you will receive”. My courage lacks more in “putting it out there”. Getting out of my comfort zone to participate in contests or to send work to publishers that I think are my best.
You are correct in saying that discipline is just as important. There has to be set times, instead of just a casual whim, to follow your passion, if it is writing.
I hope it all keeps working for you and I enjoy your sharing, so thank you 🙂

  4. My dream is to have things fall into place with my children’s books that I have written and illustrated. Then, I will move onward to stories and books that are for adults. I guess this is fun to think about, but when I had more time and money, I did send my four books to quite a lot of places! I was encouraged by a few famous children’s authors I met along the way. Thanks for the magazine and encouraging us to get out of our comfort zone! Smiles, Robin
