How I Got Published: Angela Marsons

Angela Marsons lives in the Black Country with her partner, their bouncy Labrador and a swearing parrot. She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read “Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people’s”.

After years of writing relationship based stories (My Name Is and The Middle Child) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.

In September 2013 she was signed to Bookouture.com in a 4 book deal starting the DI Kim Stone series in SILENT SCREAM. The second instalment EVIL GAMES to be published 29th May 2015.

 HOW I GOT PUBLISHED

I spent many years writing stories based in locations I didn’t know, featuring characters I thought would be popular and storylines that I thought would be appealing.  This garnered me some wonderful letters from Publishers.  However they all contained the word ‘unfortunately’ somewhere.

Eventually I decided to write a story just for me.  I set the book in my local area and offered an ear to a character that had been nagging me for years.  You will now know this voice as D.I. Kim Stone.  As I wrote I didn’t care that the setting was not glamorous or that my character was not always likeable.  I wrote Kim’s story and it came from the heart.  I filled the pages without an editor on my shoulder or a critic in my ear.

I was plucked from the slush pile of a top London literary agency by Ms Keshini Naidoo who was reading my submission on her way into work.

The two years that followed were a rollercoaster of emotions and although the relationship with the agency did not work out I was blessed in all that I learned and most importantly for my connection with Keshini.

We stayed in touch right up until she called me September 2014 with news that was destined to change my life.  She told me she had passed Silent Scream to a young and dynamic publisher called Bookouture and asked if I minded.  I was blown away.  I can’t recall my exact response but there was shrieking!

OVER 850 REVIEWS ON AMAZON.COM

What is most amazing is that Silent Scream was published in February 2015. I asked Angela Marsons how she got so many reviews in such a short period of time.

Here’s her answer:

Both my Publisher and I have been astounded by the number of reviews left for Silent Scream.  Even more surprising is that I have not asked anyone to leave a review as it is the reader’s choice as to whether they have something they would like to say.  As a writer, the reviews are hugely important as we spend many hours alone with our characters with only the reader in mind.  Our aim is to lead them on a journey that they enjoy.  To receive confirmation of this is the highest acknowledgement a writer can have.  Even the not-so-complimentary ones can be incredibly useful.  I was not aware of the level of eye-rolling in Silent Scream until it was mentioned in reviews.  I do acknowledge every post to my Website, Facebook Page and Twitter feed as people have taken the time to get in touch.  Whether that has contributed to readers taking the time to add a review to Amazon I couldn’t say but I do appreciate every single one.

Even the darkest secrets can’t stay buried forever…

Five figures gather round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood …

Years later, a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders which shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children’s home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. D.I. Kim Stone fast realises she’s on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it’s too late?

  1. This is just another confirmation that when we write authentically and from our heart, it is the right book for us. Writing a book is a journey of discovery and I am always learning. Thanks Carol, these stories really do inspire us.

    • Yes, these stories inspire me as well. We all have to find our true voice that sometimes gets muddled in what we think we should be writing or what we think might sell. In the end it’s really about listening to our heart and not focusing on some end goal that might never happen.

  2. Always a pleasure coming here to find some author inspiration reading about successful authors. And wow, how blessed to have so many reviews. An author’s dream! 🙂

  3. Congrats Angela! I’m inspired by your sharing that when you wrote what you know and what is close to you that was the beginning of your writing career taking off. 850 reviews-WOW. and thank you Carol for showcasing Angela and inspiring the rest of us with stories of the possibilities of publication.
