Femme Fatale

June is National Crime Reading Month.  What better time to introduce my Femme Fatale Series.

What I like about the Femme Fatale character is her independence, her  intelligence, her strength, her high sense of self-esteem and her belief that she can have whatever she sets her heart on.

The Femme Fatal is an extremely gorgeous woman who knows how to use her sexuality as a weapon to get what she wants from the men in her life, sometimes leading them into very dangerous and murderous situations.

The male protagonist (often a detective on her trail) who inevitably falls  for her, is immediately in trouble. At best, he will suffer from a heartbreak, but more usually,  she will convince him to commit crimes in exchange for the promise of having her.

Lauren Bacall: To Have and Have Not

If one were to package the Femme Fatale the warning on it would read:

Beware: May cause death.

I hope you’ll drop by my blog so that together we can discover these lethal women staring in some of the best of Noir fiction.

  1. Carol – The Femme Fatale figure is such an interesting character in crime fiction isn’t she? Even when she’s neither the murderer nor a co-conspirator, trouble seems to follow her. There are so many fabulous examples, too. Thanks for making me think about this…

  2. Femme Fatales are fascinating. It’s always interesting to watch how they can hold so much strength in their relationships with powerful men. One of my favourites is Virginia Hill, the girlfiend of Bugsy Siegel and a big part of his demise. πŸ™‚

    • Indeed the photo from Chloe’s blog is fantastic. It took me awhile to find the source and even now I’m not even certain that I have the first source.
I hope that my posts will live up to your expectations. πŸ™‚

      • Though the series is limited to literary femmes fatales, I can’t resist mentioning one of my favorites from the movies: Jane Greer in Out of the Past. Poor Bob Mitchum didn’t have a chance!

      • Thanks for mentioning this, Bryan. I was curious to see who had written the screenplay for the film. A guy called Daniel Mainwaring writing as Geoffrey Homes. I thought maybe I’d find it on Amazon but no such luck. I did though find about half a dozen other books with the same title – mysteries, romance, adventures, journals…:)

I love Lauren Bacall, a living legend, ex Mrs Bogie… do you remeber their couple and their movies together?… “o tempora, o mores…”(oh, what times! oh what customs! – Cicero)… last but not least: Miss Bacall has Romanian roots(origins) like me… πŸ™‚

    • Ah-ah, Ms Romania…now your roots are showing. πŸ™‚
Thanks for pointing that out about Lauren Bacall. She certainly is a legend and a perfect “la femme totale.”
I’m happy that you have HL for la femme fatale – she is an intriguing character. An in your face – larger than life character-the kind of strong character worthy of being in a novel.

  5. The Femme fatale has a great history in the past it’s an irresistibly attractive woman, especially one who leads men into difficult, dangerous, or disastrous situations; siren. Origin of femme fatale. French: literally, fatal woman.
