I am a bit late in posting this remembrance day for victims of honor crimes but we should remember everyday that honor killings are part of our domestic violence landscape. The post’s link will take you to the individual cases.
The 14th July is now the National Day of Remembrance for victims of honor based abuse. This date has been chosen as it marks the birthday of Shafilea Ahmed, who was born in Bradford and murdered in Warrington, UK in 2003 by her parents in an honor based killing.
Set up by national charity Karma Nirvana, in memory of Shafilea Ahmed, it is now the annual #DayofMemory where #WeRemember those who have lost their lives to so-called #HonourKillings.
To support the day, Hertfordshire’s Domestic Abuse Partnership is calling on everyone to look out for signs of such abuse. In addition, Karma Nirvana also calls for raising voices through the social media to raise awareness of these issues with the official hashtags #WeRemember and #DayofMemory.
In memory of the innocent girls and women who lost their lives to the barbaric custom of honor related crimes, here’s a summary recap of The…

Ironic that those men who think the women have shamed the family also think it is honourable to kill them. I haven’t been able to figure out where the honour is in murdering your own family member.

It is impossible to figure out, Anneli because there is no logic to it. Possibly simply skewed religious beliefs.

No logic at all, and it goes against basic human laws. Thou shalt not kill! (Or maim or cause physical harm).

Thank you for doing this. We must never forget. I hope their memories will move us to act so that these killings stop.

You know it takes a village, Margot. These women were so young and looked so happy. A future ahead of them cut short by evil and false power and control.

Should be a monthly event of remembering – bill boards, moments of silence.
So easy to ignore and brush aside.

That’s a great idea. ❤ I like your idea of moments of silence.

It happened here and in Dallas- their own fathers and brothers. They will never assimilate or walk away from this barbaric tradition
Why are people ignoring it? Where are the “women’s rights” groups?
On the calendar fo next year now. Thanks for bringing the day to our attention

It’s hard to imagine now, but there was a time when many of us had not heard of such things as honour killings and FGM; we would not have imagined such things could possibly exist.

Should be a bigger event so more can learn of these horrors

Absolutely agree. Philosophermouseofthehedge commented there should be a moment of silence each month. That would be appropriate.

Thank you for sharing!!… hopefully with today’s technology, the world will be more aware of these happenings and people can work together and prevent these tragedies ( and others) in the future!!… 🙂
Until we meet again.
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

I think a better term would be “DIShonor crimes.” So DISgusting and horrific. And yes, so important to honor the women and keep this issue out in the open.
